Guulabaa , Place of Koala officially opened in the New South Wales ( NSW ) Cowarra State Forest in December 2024 . Located 20 minutes out of Port Macquarie and just five minutes off the Pacific Highway , Guulabaa is special and well worth visiting when hosting an event in the NSW Mid-North Coast . Guulabaa means ‘ place of Koala ’ in local Gathang , the language of the Biripi people , the traditional owners of the land .
This unique visitor experience is a forest-based tourism precinct devoted to the overarching theme of ‘ Caring for Country ’. The project represents a partnership in forest management , bringing together local organisations committed to showcasing Aboriginal heritage and cultural practices , forest ecology and koala conservation , forest timber products , plus art and design for the visiting public . Guulabaa offers visitors a variety of opportunities for relaxation , learning and fun . As you enter the precinct , you pass the 2.5-metre sculpture painted by local artist Pauline Roods , which is part of the Hello Koalas Sculpture Trail . Koala Conservation Australia operates the world ’ s first wild Koala breeding facility on-site , where visitors can learn about the ongoing rejuvenation of the Koala species following the devastating 2019-2020 Mid-North Coast fires . Guulabaa is also home to the WildNets treetop experience , where you can bounce high amongst the treetops in the nets , or take on the thrilling Treetop Ropes Courses . After WildNets , the Bunya Local Aboriginal Land Council café at The Hub provides refreshments for visitors . The Hub is an architect-designed suite of decks where visitors can take in the sights and sounds of Cowarra State Forest .
