AWARDS 2016
ARE YOU A ROLE MODEL?
We are also aware that a work colleague can make all the difference
to the enjoyment of our job and sometimes our careers. Many of
us will have fond memories of an old boss or colleague who gave
us good advice and guidance when we most needed it, or quietly
suggested we ‘keep our powder dry and choose our moment’ during
the difficult or tense times that are inevitable in every job. However,
we’re less inclined to recognise ourselves as a colleague that can
make a difference to others.
Senior personal and executive assistants are ideally placed
to mentor and act as role models for others. They exercise good
judgement, take ambassador roles, and their position often gives them
the freedom to communicate with, and move across many disciplines
and departments within a business.
In many cases though the ‘support’ element of the job can become
‘instinct’, which translates as a reluctance to step into the limelight,
something EAs help their executives to do almost every day of the week.
YOU CAN’T HELP OTHERS
UNTIL YOU HELP YOURSELF
An old and often abused saying, but nevertheless a true one. Every
day flight attendants all over the world go through their safety demo
for passengers, quoting the inevitable phrase “always remember
to fit your own oxygen mask before helping others with theirs”.
Of course it makes perfect sense, how can we help others if we’re
about to lose consciousness ourselves? It goes against the grain and
human nature is to initially attempt to help others before ourselves,
even when it’s not the best thing to do.
YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE
By understanding the difference you make as an individual, to your
employer and your colleagues – the reason you were chosen for your
job – you can help provide recognition to your profession. Recognition
for your profession and those that work within it starts with self-
recognition, so book your table and celebrate the recognition of EAs at:
