Monday 27 August 2018 Drove to Port Augusta .
Tuesday 28 August 2018 Port Augusta to Wycheproof
Wednesday 29 August 2018 Wycheproof to home .
Statistics These are some interesting statistics :
● We drove a total of 10,152 kms
● Used 1,392lts of diesel
● Average of 13.7 lts / 100km
● The fuel cost $ 2,668.70
● The most expensive fuel was at Kunawarritji $ 3.40 / lt , then Parngurr at $ 3.20 / lt .
● The longest distance without fuel was Wiluna to Parngurr , I recorded of 857 kms and by the map it was 765 kms , the difference would be driving around to see sights etc .
● The worst fuel consumption and roads were from Well 32 to Well 48 where you start with very corrugated roads and then move onto sand dune country where your fuel consumption will be double of your normal road usage .
Points for planning a Canning Stock Rout Trip Important points for inexperience travellers planning to drive the Canning Stock Route :
● Bear in mind when driving the Canning Stock Route that once you are away from towns there is very little chance of a commercial recovery but plenty of passing traffic if you stick to the main tracks .
● Typical mechanical failures are mostly aftermarket addons . Major failures identified on this trip and others were fridge slide fixings , roof racks , bash plates and spot lights . I have seen several Pajeros and Prados with failed plastic OEM roof rails with roof racks . I recommend that you always fix a roof rack to the roof with metal brackets and remove any flimsy OEM plastic rails .
● Do not take a trailer . There were many abandoned trailers on the side of the track . One group we met sent one of their members home who was towing a trailer as they were having many issues on the sand dunes .
● The common failures for vehicles were suspension dampers , suspension springs and Engine Management Systems . I recommend check your suspension well before leaving and take an OBD 11 reader , a list of your cars error codes and some phone software like “ Touque ” so you can read and clear any codes .
