EXCEED September/October 2018 Vol 35 No:5 | Page 47

Sunday 29 of July 2018 As there was a great distance to cover and the road was very corrugated , we decided to get up early and see if we could make the Carnegie station before sunset . This part of the Gunbarrel Highway was very rough and corrugated . The Trip Leader missed Len Beadell ' s tree and plaque , but we stopped at Mt Beadell where we climbed to the top of the small hill , looked at the Len Beadell memorial tripod , read the information and observed the magnificent scenery . As we drove on the road improved and we stopped at the Geraldton Memorial Bore where we met another group of travellers having lunch . We also had lunch there and then moved on driving on a greatly improved road . We made a couple of stops to view the scenery from Mount William Lambert and Mt Moister . By then the road was almost freeway standard and we made Carnegie Station by sunset . Carnegie Station was a great camp spot where we were met by Jim who showed us around the facilities .
Monday 30 July 2018 We had a tour of Carnegie Station buildings by Jim . He was very proud of their new solar system using the old generator as a backup . We had a fast and uninteresting drive to Gunbarrel Laager campsite outside Wiluna . On the way we had morning tea with a birthday cake and candles for me . We showered and celebrated my birthday again in style with a magnificent dinner with red wine and champagne supplied by the trip leader , many thanks .
Tuesday 31 July 2018 The morning was spent exploring the very small town of Wiluna . We visited the closed pub , the art center and the statue of the two last nomadic aboriginals , Warri and Yatungka , who ran away as they could not get married under the skin system . They were later found in 1977 and forgiven by the elders and returned to live in Wiluna . In the afternoon some people slept , and I caught up with my paperwork . Dinner was cooked in the camp kitchen and a little time was spent around the campfire .
Wednesday 1 August 2018 , CSR Day 1 Stats - 14.0 lt / 100 km , 179km from the start of the CSR and average speed of 30km / hr . Off to Wiluna to fill up with fuel and start our trip up the Canning Stock Route . We stopped at all the wells and the Rock Pool until we set camp at Well 4a and cooked dinner over the camp fire . The trip leader drove past the great big yellow sign marking the start of the CSR route and Well 2 .
