Day 1 - Melbourne to Wyperfeld
An early start saw Phil arrive at our place for a morning heart starter (coffee). We
were hitched and on the road at 7, making the 7-11/Maccas roadhouse on the
Western Ring Road by 7:40. We joined Rod, Baby, Graham and Maree and were
quickly joined by the Reeds, Andrew and Harry.
Ron spent time trying to tame a recalcitrant navigation PC; we then exchanged
personal information forms then setoff for Ararat to meet Ed. Good time was made
thanks to the early start and we met Ed at the Ararat Maccas around 1030 where we
scattered looking for various morning refreshments.

Dimboola where we enjoyed the warm sun in the little park that hosted a Victorian
Railways 'J' class steam locomotive. We drove direct from Dimboola, stopping at
Rainbow to top up fuel and pickup a key for management track access. We then had
a final push to the camp ground at Western Beach on Lake Albacutya (dry since the
1970s).
This is a fabulous camp ground; clean, level and plenty of shade with ample space for
our group and 3 or 4 others. It's free camping with toilets and cold showers,
fireplaces and lots of bird life, right on the edge of the lake.
We quickly setup camp and organised a camp fire then prepared our community
camp oven dinner, comprising roast pork, roast beef, chicken, rabbit, sweet corn and
vegies. And let’s not forget about some great deserts from Ed (cheesecake &
