A trip along the Hume freeway to Tallarook provides a
chance to run one’s vehicle over the truck weighbridge
scales, and it is always a surprise how precise these
readings are. Remove a jerry can and it makes a
difference.
We had a full trip and met in Tallarook on time where
we settled in to Hock-the-Ruby cafe for drinks and a
feed, a talk on a few safety matters and an outline of
the day ahead.
Lyndon led for the day taking us along Landscape Rd and
Seed track to Main Road as we saw deer, a wombat and
some kangaroos and a wallaby. Next section was more
challenging as we followed Mountain track to the
summit of Mt Hickey for a fine view over the plateau
and leg stretch. We also witnessed the regrowth where
an earlier fire had been. We descended via Magazine
track to Bills track, Wheelers track and then back to the
camp area.

fire with bark, twigs and wood. Soon the fire was
underway and heating multiple billies for various cups
of tea and coffee.
The afternoon involved a drive along East Falls Rd to
Warragul Rocks, but on the way, we spotted a fire still
burning unattended at Tassie Camp so extinguished that
and removed the extensive mess of cans and glass in the
fire place. The view from Warragul rocks is always a
highlight and probably the best on the Tallarook
plateau. We then drove to the reservoir, then followed
Reservoir track and took the steeper Bridge track back
up to Main Road before heading our own ways home.
One overall impression was how dry the whole plateau
was with no surface water except the reservoir and
many trees stressed as they await rain, or to die.

We planned an extended lunch at 1ARC Freemans camp
where we took over a fireplace, checked our fire safety
regulations for this time of year, and proceeded to set a
