EXCEED MAY 2017 May_Emag | Page 34

Sections 1 started from the Moonambel football ground base camp and headed west and then south into the forest ending at a camp site in the Pyrenees Ranges. Participants came across check points where they were required to disembark from their vehicles and carry out a specified task. The end of section 1 gave the participants a 30 minute break where they could grab a coffee and refresh their energies with donuts provided by the Wanderin 4 Wheelers club. Section 2 began with the route notes being provided to participants and plotting began. This again took around an hour to plot. The driving was much more challenging in this section with some low range required by most vehicles down and up some tricky sections. After approximately half of the vehicles had passed through near a farm house, an issue arose with the farmer blocking further traffic. This caused a disruption to the following vehicles for which the scoring later had to be adjusted to compensate those participants. Thanks to those participants for keeping a cool head and not escalating the matter. Sections 2 went further south and east before making it’s way north and back to base camp. There was a wonderful roast dinner provided by Moonambel Community on the Saturday night between the end of sections 2 and the start of section 3. This provided participants the chance to refuel themselves and have a 1hour break before doing it again for the final section. Section 2 was also the end of the event for those participants who were only registered for the “Challenge Light”. 32 Vol 34 No. 4 - May 2017
