PRESIDENT’S REPORT

April 2019

Welcome to our sixteen new members who have joined in 2019 through personal contacts, the 4WD Show at Lardner Park in February and our internet presence. Some have already been on a Proficiency course and others have become involved in trip planning and in trip leading.

Our hard-working Membership Secretary Virginia Gilhooly is heading overseas on a Club trip shortly and asked for one or two people to cover for her during the busy renewal period. It was heartening that two new members of 2018, James Cooke and Terry Barbie, offered to help and have started to become familiar with the membership role. Thanks James and Terry.

Fires are still a concern with several still burning in Victoria but hardly making the news. Fire regulations are still in place, and we need to remain vigilant when lighting any fires in the open. Some areas within the high country are closed because of recent burns.

Metal spikes driven into the ground along some 4-wheel drive tracks have caused punctures and remain a concern for all 4WD clubs. There are some positive things that we can do such as be on a lookout for these spikes and report any occurrences including suspicious behaviour. This is also a time when we might re-iterate our values so that the public, including these vandals, are aware of our strong commitment to responsible use of the forests, and our long track record in this area.

At the March Club meeting, I outlined a proposal to review and possibly reduced the Committee size. At the subsequent Committee meeting we decided to retain the current Committee positions which are stipulated in our Rules, but to update the roles of each Committee position to ensure they all reflect the evolving nature of the Club and its needs.
