Trip Reports

Day 1. - Mt. Benambra Friday 26th January.

With Laurie as trip leader and Guy as Charlie, 5 vehicles left Colac Colac Caravan Park for a drive to Mt Benambra. As we drove through the picturesque Nariel Valley a comment was made on the UHF that it was like driving through a Hans Heysen painting. Soon after we hit the gravel road and started the climb to a lookout that has great views of Mt Bogong and Dartmouth Dam. After the lookout stop the air in the rubber was lowered for our steep descent down the Dart River Track to the Dart River Historic Zone where gold was discovered in1874. Many relics of the mining days can still be seen. After morning tea as we proceeded along the Benambra Spur Track we came to a small tree across the track, this was removed with some axe work from Laurie and Brian.

As we rounded the next corner a bigger tree blocked our way, a couple of mechanical saws soon made a gap for the vehicles to pass through.

We climbed some steep sections of the track and arrived at Mt. Benambra where we had lunch at the Towermans Hut and then walked up to the fire tower on the summit. The fire spotter came down for a chat while we all admired the views over Dartmouth Dam and the surrounding mountains.
