EXCEED March/April 2018 Vol 35 No:2 | Page 43

The Ranger on duty met us as we climbed the tower to the lookout platform. He was very informative, giving us information as to what was where and where was what. We left Mt. Benambra and headed down the Mt. Benambra Rd and turned off onto the very twisty Callaghan Creek track into Bucheen Creek and crossing the Tallangatta creek again and winding our way westward along the Bucheen creek to Cravensville. We then followed Gibb Rd, Cravensville Rd and Mongans track to Lucyvale and home.

All in all, it was a good day out on a variety of roads and tracks, some slow, some fast, some bumpy and some steep but all enjoyable. We did about 180 kilometres for the day. Thanks Rob for picking up the extras and leading the alternative trip, it was greatly appreciated. Even Sue enjoyed the days reading back in camp. I think she read three books while we were away and loved the peace and quiet.

Today’s trip was a shorter journey and allowing for the fact that some people were heading off home, the North East Explorer group and North East Explorer- The Overflow group got together and followed our leader, Laurie

A cooler day at 25 degrees.

After a briefing session we departed the rapidly emptying Clack Clack Caravan Park at 915 am to the Corryong Cemetery. We viewed the grave of the “Man From Snowy River”, Jack Riley who was buried there on 16 July 1914. The grave has a large round concrete headstone, the significance of which we did not determine.

After a much needed coffee at The Upper Murray Community Bakery in Corryong we drove through Cudgewa, a town that time has passed by, which in itself makes an attractive place. Then onto the Burrowa – Pine Mountain National Park. Here we drove along the Lower Dogman Track, a slow windy track and then started climbing up to Bluff Falls. Alas, a log across the track necessitated a deviation around it that called for the able guidance of Laurie, low ratio and diff lock up a steep slope and through a narrow gap back onto the track. Quite exciting, with lots of photos.

While the flow of water over Bluff Falls was low it was nevertheless well worth the visit.

From the Falls we headed back to camp to enjoy a relaxing day after 2 quite full days at Mt Benambra and Mt Pinnabar.

Thanks to Laurie, Chris, Ian and Maryanne.
