TRIP REPORTS blackwood wattle, and silver wattle which was just coming into flower. Sunday 28th. Day 3. The cloud was already clearing before we set off from the cabins for Mt Wombat and we had a good view from the summit towards Euroa, Ruffy, Mt Concord and the Paps, but Mt Buller was still in cloud. Seven Creeks just below Polly McQuinns reservoir (BW). View from Mt Wombat 799m above sea level, looking down onto the Kelvin View farmland and farther afield to the low country of Castle Creek (NP). Heading south we passed through the town of Strathbogie of 300 people. This town has several claims to fame including being on the Sydney to Melbourne flight path with established aeronautical navigation facilities. It regularly features on the nightly news as the coldest place in Victoria outside the Alps which is a function of its elevated plateau and unusual bowl- shaped topography. Some of the joys of the area are the absolute quiet at night, fresh air and generally clear and sunny days. It was then a quick stop at Polly McQuinns reservoir on Seven Creeks before a drive across Enderlee farmland to the Ridge Road aerial for a spectacular view across the Goulburn Valley to the south and along Castle Creek valley northward towards Euroa and Creighton Hills. Penny Lane then took us westward farther along the plateau edge to Gobur corner and into Ruffy. Penny Lane can be rather wet and muddy in winter but with a little care we did not need 4wd. At Ruffy it was tyres to full pressure for the remaining bitumen through the lovely locations of the Highlands plateau including the Boathole on Hughes Creek, Mt Tickatory, Dropmore, Kobyboyn, Habies Howe, Highlands and then off the plateau, across the Goulburn River and into Yea.
