TRIP REPORTS
from the main course and one of our members
found themselves nose first into a snowbank at
one point – no harm fortunately.
Morning tea was had at the Pinnacle’s turnoff
and then we headed off along the Mt Kent
track. We soon caught up to another group
heading the same way who were being delayed
by trees across the track, so while we had to
wait a bit, the track was being nicely cleared for
us. This happened on a few occasions until the
front group found their lead vehicle off the side
of the track and needed to winch back on.
Having spent significant time waiting for this
recovery, and assessing the deepening snow
with still about 2 km to go and significant
altitude to gain, we decided this was not the
day to persevere to the summit, so we turned
around and had lunch in a nice clearing. Mt
Kent would have to wait for another trip –
impromptu planning suggested a day trip on
the Australia Day Talbotville trip, but of course
that never happened so it remains elusive.
There were plenty of others out as well and we
had to stop twice to wait for a vehicle to be
recovered. All in all, an interesting day and
great experience for those who hadn’t driven
in the snow before.
The trip back to the Lodge should have been
more straight forward, however with still
substantial amounts of snow on the road, a
lack of attention could see someone depart
