The Tallarook Plateau comes in two halves, the tracks of the southern slope are good
all year around, and the plateau tracks to the north are closed throughout winter. We
took full advantage of the range of tracks and scenic stops available on the plateau
itself.
The drive up Landscape Road was an introduction to the spectacular granite
countryside and several farm lots. Soon we turned off onto Fred track to warm up on
minor rocks and water, then Cadell track to the summit of Mt Hickey. Instead of a
good view we caught the only cloud for a while and we actually found it quite cool.
Then it was down Magazine track for morning tea at Freeman 1ARC before heading
north along Wheeler track with a few washouts and rocks, then the giant road
mounds on West Falls track leading into the Trawool reservoir. This was lunch and it
was now nice and sunny.
After lunch we drove to Warragul Rocks where the view was excellent across the
Strathbogie plateau, Mt Buller and Mt Torbreck. Finally, it was down Brockwell track
and back up Bridge track for a more sustained section of 4WD driving before
returning to Main road and preparing for home. Neil Phillips 1744
