T EC H TALK Navigation/Maps Google/Applemaps for navigation and traffic information Phone Make and answer calls Messages Send and receive text messages Music Play music from a library All the above, support voice control for nearly every action. Mobile Reception The SDA requires strong mobile phone coverage to provide the functionality mentioned above. This includes voice and 3G/4G (data) signals. Navigation/maps and music (if streaming live) are heavily dependent on data reception. Good voice reception can co-exist with a mobile data black spot which interrupts the continuity of navigation/ maps and music streaming. So it is possible to get good reception for voice calls and text and not have navigation/ maps or music from Spotify. Downloading maps and good buffering for music can help in such situations. Remote 4WD Navigation The current functionality of the SDA does not support the use of navigation/maps in remote areas with no mobile reception. The functionality of 4WD apps like OziExplorer are not available. The best way to explore remote areas is to use a separate device with a built in GPS, loaded with suitable software (apps) and maps. However, the existing regulations and laws on the use of mobile electronic devices while driving apply in any part of Australia. It eliminates the need to update devices in the car and allows instant delivery of apps as they get rolled out.
