SATURDAY - 11th March
The original plan had been to head to Barmah and camp on the river but as a consequence of a reccie we choose
to relocate at Swifts Creek which is on the NSW side of the border. Alas, as a result, we were not permitted to have
campfires, restriction being in place until the end of March. But Swifts Creek offered some grassed areas, boat ramp,
pit toilets and good camp sites without widow makers overhead. Better still, it was just a few km off the Deniliquin
road in the Murray Valley National Park.
We met the Donnybrook Shell servo on the Hume Highway for 8:00am and headed off with the expectation of
meeting Graham Halliburton at Heathcote as we headed towards Echuca. Graham had made the trip directly over
from Yarck. Our meet up was right on time and we continued on towards Echuca.
The trip through to Echuca was uneventful and we arrived there to a busy Saturday morning. Brian headed off to
find the bakery, and to suss out some worms and grubs. Others all met up at the Visitor’s Information Centre and as it
turned out we bumped into some other Paj Club members who were heading off to Barmah with friends.
The trip up the Cobb Highway was quite quick and we arrived at Swifts Creek in time to setup camp and have some
lunch.
At 13:30 we assembled for a run up through the Gulpa Island precinct, an area north of Mathoura. We followed the
Narrows River Road back to the Millewa Road and then on to Edwards River picnic area. Along the way we passed
some magnificent facilities at Picnic Point – fantastic and quite amazing and
