Trip Summary Craig ’ s hut and other surrounding huts around Mt Stirling Distance & Route Fuel & Supplies Ensured that we had adequate fuel to start the journey and those members that wanted to refuel after the trip drove into Mansfield and purchased fuel and supplies . Difficulty Level / Vehicle Requirements Easy for all of the vehicles on this trip due to the dry conditions . If wet , it would have been very different .
Trip Detail
It was very exciting setting out for the first trip in our own 4WD to visit the iconic Craig ’ s Hut located on the top of Mt Stirling . We were lucky enough to have perfect weather and enjoyed getting out and about with clear blue skies above . We set off at 9am with our trip leader Helen who was leading her very first trip which was amazing .
Setting off from the Tolmie Sports & Recreational Ground we drove through the valleys to Buttercup Road which is very pretty with rolling hills and farms that you would love to visit . The road turns into a dirt road and then finally hit the area which is for 4WD ’ s only due to a couple of small creek crossings . It was time to air down ready for the drive ahead . The valley was full to bursting with campers along the Buttercup Creek with Kings of Adventure being advertised prominently from most of the campsites . It would be a lovely spot to camp in the off season with some camping areas having long drops .
Tomahawk Hut was the first hut visit for the day along the Buckland Spur track . It is the sixth highest hut in Victoria and restored back in 2008 due to the fires in the area . Colin was discussing the benefits of joining the Victorian High Country Hut Association as it is a great way to assist the Association in a small financial way or you can become more involved and assist with maintenance or rebuilding of the huts .
