The trip was planned as a small night drive however we ran out of nights at the muster so it ended up as short day trip This trip was originally planned as a night drive however , we ran out of nights so this ended up being a short day trip . Difficulty Level Easy to Medium – Given it was planned as a night drive , hazards were kept to a minimum .
Trip Detail
NOTE : Due to an unfortunate ‘ cleaning ’ accident , my original trip notes were ‘ misplaced ’ so this report is relying heavily on my memory .
This trip departed from Tolmie at a relaxed 10ish in the morning . We headed towards Merrijig and the Howqua Track turn off . ( Many of you will know this as the turnoff on the Mt Bulla Rd ( towards Sheepyard and Fry ’ s Flats Camping Area ).
We travelled a few kilometres down Howqua track until we reached three chains track . Here we all aired down and prepared for the adventure ahead . We had a number of ‘ newish ’ drivers on the trip , so we kept the pace brisk but manageable . As we had to be back in camp in time for the muster group pic . The first turn off was Three Chains , taking us down Station Track . A steep decent to the river below . Frome here , a gentle meander to the Running Creek Camping Area where we stopped for a lunch break and some adventitious ‘ young folk ’ decided to splash in the river .
After lunch , we headed east along Steiners Rd , till we came to Howqua Hills track . As we headed down an average decent , we came across an abandoned Kia parked on the side of the track . We assume ‘ google ’ directions may have played a part in the car being where it was . It was a Kia SUV and probably would have been able to drive up the hill to get out under its own steam .
