A journey back to the Coburg Peninsular

Contribution by Mike Moore #1634

Over the past years, many club members have opted to journey to Coburg Peninsular. The original settlement was founded in 1838 and many have had photographs taken sitting at the base of the Smith Point Beacon.

I was the charge engineer on HMAS Ardent in 1978 and was a member of the reconstruction team that rebuilt the beacon. The following article is from “Navy News” which records some of the history of the Beacon and the reconstruction. I have also included some photographs that I took at the time. Some of which appeared in the article. I also have a copy of an occasional paper written by Father Frank Flynn that provides additional details and history on the founding of the Victoria township and the reconstruction. Happy to email a copy of this to anyone interested.
