Macao : a new gateway between China and the rest of the world

Macao is well-positioned as a central node in one of the world ’ s greatest economic powerhouses . Encompassing an area only slightly larger than Switzerland , with a population larger than Germany and a GDP higher than Russia , the Greater Bay Area may well acquire world renown as it grows into one of the world ’ s most productive economic and industrial regions .
More companies will be investing and conducting business in the region . As the area develops , Macao may prove one of the most popular footholds for foreign businesses seeking a relationship with China . Hong Kong has a long history of attracting international finance and MICE organisers , but Macao has its own set of unique features . The city is renowned for world-class leisure facilities , hyper-modern infrastructure and a rich hospitality industry .
The newly-built bridges across the Pearl River , connecting Hong Kong with Macao and Shenzhen with Zhongshan , are two high-profile examples of investments into regional connectivity . Local buyers and sellers will be able to travel to events in neighbouring cities with ease . International clients will also benefit from the new transport links , as they can take part in events spanning multiple zones within the GBA . One

Despite its size , Macao punches above its weight in event space , with over 261,000sqm of venue space distributed across Hengqin and Macao-proper . The dual-city partnership between Macao and Hengqin sets Macao apart from its MICE competitors . Recently , UFI held the 2024 Asia Pacific Conference at multiple venues across Macao and Hengqin . The attractions in Hengqin , including nature reserves and entertainment complexes , complement Macao ’ s already rich cultural heritage and luxury offerings , giving organisers the ability to create versatile experiences for their attendees .
Macao ’ s status as the ' Las Vegas of Asia ' can be a selling-point for MICE organisers , offering delegates a variety of entertainment and hospitality . The ability to host exhibitions in Macao ’ s state-of-the-art venues and post-meeting retreats in Hengqin ’ s scenic , natural spots , make Macao a standout destination in the region .
Relaxed policies on tax will further boost Macao ’ s appeal . With no valueadded tax and lower duties on luxury goods , Macao has become a prime shopping destination for high-end travellers .
The more the local area develops , the more Macao will grow as a meeting space for buyers seeking to invest in the region . As the Greater Bay Area matures , Macao is likely to serve as an increasingly important gateway between China and the rest of the world . Macao will double up as a foothold in one of the world ’ s fastest-growing economic regions and a standalone destination for business events . With a combination of modern infrastructure , leisure , and cultural appeal , Macao may be poised to rise among the giants of MICE in Asia-Pacific .
