1979 : Food and drink Montgomery launched the International Food and Drink Event in 1979 in Olympia London , an exhibition that has since become a cornerstone of the food industry , attracting over 30,000 visitors annually . |
1989-1990 : Royal connections continue In 1989 , ( then ) Prince Charles attended the International Food and Drinks event . A year later , in 1990 , Princess Diana visited Hotelympia to watch the finals of School Meals Cook of the Year . However , the day Diana visited did not come without its problems . Extreme weather conditions caused damage to the roof , so the event had to be evacuated . The show didn ’ t stop , though – attendees just went to the pub next door to continue proceedings ! |
1999 : Partnerships for growth As the millennium approached , Montgomery partnered with Reed Exhibitions to form Fresh RM . This joint venture led to the launch of the Speciality & Fine Food Fair and strengthened existing events like the International Food & Drink Event . The partnership ’ s success lasted until Montgomery acquired Reed ’ s share in 2011 . |
2007 : A global stage for photography The World Photography Awards , launched in Cannes in 2007 and sponsored by Sony , quickly became one of Montgomery ’ s flagship events . By offering free entry and promoting inclusivity , the awards have supported aspiring photographers worldwide , echoing Montgomery ’ s original mission to make a positive difference . |
1984 : New heights The Liverpool Garden Festival in 1984 drew 3.4m visitors over six months , making it the largest UK event since the Great Exhibition of 1851 . Beyond the numbers , the festival revitalised Liverpool during a period of economic hardship . |
1990 : Kidnapped in Colombia In Bogota , Colombia , an astonishing chain of events occurred – Bryan Montgomery got kidnapped ! After a shootout , he was taken away only for his kidnappers to later find out they had mistaken his identity . The broken glass from the car wedged in his hand offered a permanent reminder of the traumatic events .

2006 : Entering new territories Montgomery ’ s launch of its first oil and gasfocused show in Libya in 2006 demonstrated its willingness to explore uncharted markets .
