“TECHHIRE” GRANT

n March 9, 2015, President Barack Obama attended the National League of Cities annual
meeting to discuss a new initiative by the United States Department of Labor. By the time
he spoke at the conference, the country was already experiencing a steady recovery from
the recession. There were now more than 5 million job openings in the United States, more than at
any point since 2001. However, more than 500,000 of these jobs were technology-related—and they
were not being filled.
