The theater now dazzles a growing clientele, presenting classic and contemporary drama, comedy and suspense with compassion and conviction. Its performances are truly one of a kind and seek to provide unique experiences not replicated in any other community. Within the confines of an intimate playhouse environment, audiences enthusiastically honor performers with standing ovations.
“ Limelight’ s mission is to provide a place where all patrons can come to enjoy the art of authentic storytelling," said Sherrie Provence, the theater’ s executive director.“ When a story is unfolding live onstage, right before your eyes, nothing
Sherrie Provence else can be more impactful.”
One of Limelight’ s most important programs opened recently to much acclaim.“ When All the Saints Are Gathered” expressively chronicled the somber Civil War history in St. Augustine. Commissioned and written specially for Limelight, Provence recalls the audience was unsettled by the poignant history and provocative interpretation in its reading.“ People were literally shaken to hear a story about our community, sitting here in our community. It’ s a remarkable narrative that we were able to just burst open on stage. It was quite a memorable experience.”
Limelight is always buzzing as a beacon of activity
for creativity. Theater staff invites community affiliates to use its facility as a welcoming place for the arts, opening its doors for the local film society, amphitheater, musical‘ open mic night’ and art galleries. Staff champions align with the entire creative community to help support ongoing culture across the city.
Provence and her team are advocates for sustaining live theater for young people. They believe that our youth is the future lifeblood of the theater.“ In this digital world, kids aren’ t involved in enough creativity,” she said.“ We need to raise them to learn how to create for themselves. Limelight is ideal for this purpose.” Funding to support all these endeavors comes from an additional community partner: the St. Johns
