Subsea cables carry approximately 95 % of all international communications. These high-speed fiber lines, laid on the ocean floor, are essential to everything from streaming video and cloud services to banking, logistics and innovation, according to the release.
The cable landing station and data center will provide power and support for subsea cables entering the U. S., as well as serve as a communications exchange point, host secure colocation space for partners and local businesses, and deliver connectivity to support future high-tech growth, the release states.“ This is a fantastic announcement for the city’ s tech sector, and a catalyst for high-tech growth,” said Craig McKinney, Palm Coast economic development manager, in the release.“ From data analytics and cybersecurity to cloud computing and AI, these industries rely on global connectivity. This project puts Palm Coast in a prime position for future advancements.”
According to the city release, the facility is designed to be low-impact and community-friendly, using a recycled refrigerant cooling system to keep water usage minimal.“ It will operate quietly, with only occasional generator testing, and is much smaller than traditional hyperscale data centers,” the release states.“ From a security standpoint, the risk is extremely low, as concerns in this industry typically focus on undersea cable interference, not the land-based infrastructure.”
Palm Coast officials said the project will bring longterm benefits to the city, including increasing the commercial tax base, creating jobs and attracting new business development.
“ The presence of global leaders like Google and DC BLOX sends a strong message: Palm Coast is open for opportunity,” the release states.“ Their investment puts the city on the radar for other tech-driven businesses seeking a connected, forward-thinking community.”
