Editor’s Note
W
ith still so much to do and the year
having passed us by in the blink of an
eye, it doesn’t seem right to be busy with
the winter magazines just yet.
However, as the year does start to draw to a close,
and the winter nights fast approach I can’t help but
feel excited about tucking up our horses once again
at the end of every day knowing we’ve done our
best to keep them happy, warm and safe.
Now, some of you may stable all year round. When
competing it’s fair to say most horses have to be
kept in for one reason or another. On the other
hand, owners may lack grazing, or perhaps an
illness prevents the summer 24 hour turnout. Even
in these instances, however, stabling hours will still
increase over the months to come. Which turns our
attention to several topics; clothing, feeding and
essential items.
This month we’ve included a selection of articles,
features and items we hope are of interest, but
above all, helpful.
Our two monthly health features look at worming,
not just for winter but all year around. Then our
second piece revisits colic, focusing on key areas
relating to the problem; symptoms, different types of
colic and the role the vet plays.
There are some ideas on how to keep warm this
month, whereas next month we focus on the
horse’s winter wardrobe. Layering continues to play
a big part in our bid to stay warm, so we’ve kept this
in mind when adding in items we think you may
like.

Often, horses can get a little unsettled due to
the change in climate, lack of daylight hours and
spending longer stood in. It’s at this point frustration
can creep in leading to accidents. Our first aid
feature this month looks at essential items of kit, a
selection of must haves and a testimonial.
Take a look at our ‘feeding
for condition’ feature on
page 32.
There are some great events still to come for
2018. Your Horse Live is always one for shopping
enthusiasts who enjoy demonstrations over ridden
competition. This is held each year in Warwickshire
during November. Two of our favourite
international shows also take place in December.
London Olympia International Horse Show and
Liverpool International Horse Show both tick boxes
for top class competition, entertainment, shopping
and opportunity to soak up even more fabulous
festive spirit.
