EVERYTHING HORSENote

With the coldest month ' s now behind us , I ' m certainly looking forward to a summer filled with horses and finally being able to get back out and about .

The EHV-1 outbreak across Europe seems to have eased over recent weeks , with clear plans drawn out by the FEI to work towards a safe return to competition . In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic , the cancellation of competition was the last thing anyone expected . However , needs must to ensure the health and well-being of the equine . You may have seen in our news category of the website an EHV Relief Fund has been set up . The project is led by worldrenowned riders , such as Peter Charles , who are helping raise funds for those affected by the virus . A fantastic initiative , yet again showing how the equestrian community can pull together in times of need , which brings me naturally onto the next topic , the coronavirus pandemic .
There was confusion over whether the use of indoor arenas was allowed earlier in March , in line with government guidelines as lockdown eases . Initially , it appeared the government gave the go-ahead for activity to resume indoors . The BEF ( British Equestrian ) later withdrew this information and issued a correction stating that activity within an indoor arena continues to be prohibited in line with legislation . There are , however , some exceptions to this rule ; you ' ll find the complete statement on the news pages of our website .
Horse health features in this month ' s magazine include laminitis and kissing spine . I was recently inspired to cover kissing spine as a horse at the yard where my horses are stabled suffers from the condition . His owner , Lauren , has been kind enough to share the story , so naturally , we enlisted the help of Dr Jessica May to answer questions surrounding the issue .
The awareness and importance of improving fitness in the saddle continues to be a primary focus for many . It ' s clear to see from all the research that a rider ’ s ability has a significant impact on the horse ' s way of going . I , for one , will be spending more time this summer concentrating on getting fit and losing some more weight ( yes , I succumbed to one too many cakes in March ). Making healthier choices in lifestyle and diet will hopefully pay off in and out of the saddle . I ' ll let you know how I get on . If you , like me , are eager to get fit , Clair Gangadeen , Founder of RiderCise , is back this month with some simple must-do exercise to help you coordinate and balance yourself when riding .
We have many features for you to get stuck in to , including our regulars and a fabulous interview with Ollie Holman , a steel horse sculpture extraordinaire whose proudest piece stands at Cheltenham racecourse !
Take care and stay safe .
