Hurrah , it ’ s spring ! It ’ s that time of year when my inner child explodes , and I get giddy about what the year ( and warmer weather ) has to offer ! Ok , so COVID is still - and will probably always be - a ‘ thing ’, but don ’ t let that cloud your judgement ! Let us instead take time out to appreciate the easier days ahead of what has been a long , cold and very wet winter .
I ’ ve found that getting older seems to be more of a burden than I expected it would . Gone are the days of mucking out horses faster than lightening to be in the saddle by 9 am to show off a fancy new move or prepare for an hours worth of hacking out . My once youthful self has been replaced by somewhat of a quirky , squeakier and far stiffer version that apparently now suffers from lower back pain for months at a time ... and although I ’ m not quite ready to pick up my bus pass just yet , I ’ m pretty sure the time will come a lot quicker than I hope .
February brought with it some sad news as we learned about the passing of talented horseman and Eventer Matthew Wright , the driving force behind Riders Minds . Matthew leaves a legacy that won ’ t be forgotten , a platform to raise awareness of mental health issues and somewhere to turn to should we feel the need . Other great reads ... you will find in our news section of this month ’ s magazine . Our thoughts are with his family and friends and the wider equestrian community who have been or are affected by issues with mental health .
My favourite article this month is written by Louise Napthine , an expert in equine behaviour . The article ; ‘ Equine Behaviour : Can Horses be Naughty ?’ is a fascinating read . I ’ ve long had an interest in the area of behaviour and why horses act the way they do . With all the research available and with experts on hand like Louise - I recommend you give the piece a read ; it ’ s a real eye-opener !
I truly feel we ’ ve got a great magazine for you this month , along with Louise ’ s behavioural piece . Our content writers and equine professionals have been hard at work to provide you , our reader , with great educational , engaging and informative content .
Eventing legend Lucinda Green joins us this month with a top tips piece on preparing for competition post lockdown , and we ’ ve our usual round-up of news , and a host of product features for you to get stuck into too .
