Junior and Young Riders
Written by Daisy Jackson
I
n preparation for the beginning of
the 2016 Junior and Young Rider
season,the selectors, along with
judge, Jo Graham, observed more
than 45 riders vying for a position on
the squads during the viewing day in
September this year. 25 combinations
performed their team test and a further
22 riders attended the viewing day
on foot. The squads have now been
divided into 4 groups from ‘prime’ to
‘ones to watch’. All riders are hoping for
the chance to compete internationally
and ultimately to be selected for the
European Championships 2016 which
will be held in Spain. The riders have

In addition, further selections have been
made from other young combinations
who put themselves forward for
the Excel Talent Programme. The
programme is funded by Sport England

After her selection onto the programme,
rider Ella Cotterill talks us through the
history of her current partnerships and
explains about her future plans with
both her rides;
‘‘To have the opportunity to be
on the British Equestrian Federation
(BEF) Excel Talent Programme is just
incredible; I'm really looking forward to
starting training sessions, and working
with a great team of people. Casa
(pictured) is 14 and is by Cassander
Elite out of a Rubenstien mare, and is a
British Warmblood, bought by us from
Claire Speer in August of this year after
she had very kindly allowed me to ride
and compete with for the previous 18
months. My aim with him is to carry on
competing and improving at Advanced
Medium/ PSG, as well as competing at
premier leagues and high profile shows
at Junior and Young Rider level . I intend
to make the most of my last year's run
in Juniors and prepare for my move up
Young Riders at the end of 2016. My
past achievements with Casa include
coming second at Hickstead CDI in the
Junior Team Test, second at the Regional
Championships, and 6th at the National
Dressage Championships at Advanced
Medium”.
Troy is a 14 year old Irish Sports
Horse by Master Imp who was
previously competed by Amanda
Goldsbury. We bought him in July
2015 and I have competed him up to
Advanced Medium. My future plans
with Troy include continuing to compete
him at Advanced Medium locally and
possibly some premier leagues and high
profile shows with him at Junior level
and hopefully Young Riders at the end of
2016. Both horses a ɔ
