Pony Squad Rider Angus Corrie-Deane
I caught up with 14 year old pony rider Angus Corrie-Deane who has already represented his country 3 times!
“I was lucky enough to be selected for National Training last year (2012) on the lovely pony Cadnam Stellata that the List 2a judge Heather Ashley so kindly lent us. Stella has taught me so much, and it was with a heavy heart after the FEI test trials with Trond Asmyr in January that we were asked to find a new pony if I wanted to pursue my dream of riding for GB. Luckily, with Claire Moir's help we found Grayswood Orlando (Ginger to his friends). He joined the Corrie-Deane family in February 2012, and I was upgraded to the Pony Squad.
Ginger gave me a 3rd at Myerscough Premier League before being nominated for Addington CDI, Moorsele CDI, Pompadour CDI, Viezon CDI and finally Hickstead CDI, where we gained a podium finish and came 3rd. We also had a very successful Home International winning the Medium Championship for South West BYRDS. In addition, we went to Sheepgate entering 12 classes and coming away with 2 sashes, 4 firsts and 6 2nds - as well as lots of happy memories and new friends. The final event of the season was joining the Bright Future
Quadrille at The Nationals in Stoneleigh, when Peter Storr was asked to choreograph and produce a spectacle of the future talent in a
challenging piece. It could all have gone so wrong - and in some of the early practices, Ginger was enjoying
himself so much that a simple trot was out of the question!
"That pony is ready for PSG" said Peter, as Ginger insisted in passaging and piaffing his way through the programme! Luckily, it was alright on the night, and Carl Hester joined in the celebrations.
In September, it was time for Squad selection again; this time for 2014. We had a great time and were lucky enough to be chosen there and then - So it's forward into 2014 with the hope of more chances of being chosen to ride for GB!”
Angus loves his dressage. His school (Radley College) are very supportive and it's very much a family affair with his mother Mary, who rode for GB as a junior eventer, coaching him on a daily basis alongside regular lessons with Claire Moir and Peter Storr. Angus said "I couldn't believe it when Mum bought me Ginger. He is such a fun pony.I knew when I took him down to Sparsholt just after I'd got him that he was going to be special" Debbie and Daisy Jackson were there on that day and took some super photos of the early partnership. So, if you ask Angus
want he wants to do with his
life...."Well to produce dressage
horses, of course" he says as if
it were anunnecessary
question!
