Water is considered to have high surface tension in comparison with other liquids because the molecules of water are strongly adhered to each other. This helps the insects and other light things to skate freely on the surface of the water in an over filled glass (check the figure below)

Detergents have two main

endings called the head and the and they are members of a family called surfactants.The head in the detergent is attracted to the water whereas the tail keeps away and repels it, so detergent molecule prefer to be on water. So the detergent molecules covers the surface of the water.

Detergent heads are attracted to water, but not nearly as strongly as water molecules are attracted to each other water molecules on the surface pull away from where you add detergent.

This trick only works well once because the detergent molecules that cover the surface of water stay there.
