Dr. Seuss Party
by: A Lively Affair
I
wanted to host a fun and whimsical party for my son and a few of
his friends. After a trip to Target (you know that strategically placed
“Dollar Spot” section) I found some great and inexpensive mini lunch
boxes, tote bags, a “Dream Big” sign and loads of classroom supplies. I
pulled together the remaining decor in red, turquoise, white and silver
color palette.
A quick trip to the fabric store in search of a classic Dr. Seuss print proved successful and I quickly whipped up runners for the table. For a little
twist, I placed runners across the table perpendicular instead of the traditional manner of placing a runner along the length of a table which
also allowed it to serve as a place mat. Like a great haircut, a good tablescape is all about layering. Linen, runner, charger, plates, tableware,
glasses, etc. While you certainly won’t make the same effort as you would
for an adult dinner party, pulling together a few of these elements sure
can make a kids party feel special. I re-purposed red plastic chargers
and the glass milk bottles which are part of existing my party prop stash.
Add washi tape, paper straws, name plates, tote bag and lunch box party
favors and fresh flowers and the table is done!
I love the retro-industrial look of good old metal lockers. I was lucky
to source a free set via my neighborhood list serve (similar to Craigslist), spray painted them with a fresh coat of glossy white paint and voila! Crisp, clean lockers for the price of a few cans of spray paint. I also
re-purposed red lanterns that are part of my party prop stash. Layered
tassel and composition paper garlands, colorful balloon backdrop and a
variety of sweet treats make any party complete.
My last little touch for an extra special party were custom t-shirts for
each guest. Cat in the Hat tees with their respectiv e monogram that can
be worn again for events like Dr. Seuss’s birthday.
Hip, Hip, Hooray... let’s make it a GREAT day!
