Making SPACE

Making SPACE

ATTICS & BASEMENTS

Often times , attics are not considered to be anything more than a dark abyss where unused or “ rarely-used ” items are banished to until further notice . We can , however , make the most of our attic space with a little organization . Of course , clothing and valuables should not be stored in extreme conditions , such as high heat ( attics are seen more in the lower states ), so if your attic needs a little “ TLC ,” don ’ t use it as an extra closet . Consider vacuum-sealed bags to store extra quilts and / or fabrics or plush items . Place the bags in bins with tight-fitting lids for optimum protection . Attics are also a great place to store furniture that may have been acquired from a relative , or decorations that are only used once a year . If you can , install a dehumidifier or a climate-control device in the attic to keep the air as fresh as possible .
Basements have relatively the same rules when it comes to storage . Basements are more common in the north , so temperatures in the space will be much cooler and more damp . Paper products and fabrics will mildew if they ’ re left out in the open air for a long period of time . For this reason , you may want to consider a dehumidifier or climate-controller here , as well . Make sure to use bins and labels as much as possible , to ensure ideal organization . Larger items are more easily stored in basements , but the downstairs climb is just as treacherous as the rickety attic ladder walk , so use caution when hauling big pieces to and from these spaces .
Basements are also great for providing more living space if and when they ’ re finished properly . If your storage problem lives within the fact that there isn ’ t enough room for people , rather than items , consider finishing your basement into a mother-in-law suite , or a second living room . A multi-purpose family room is also an option , where you can add a half bath , a sleeping nook , and a large open floor plan for gatherings . The installation of hideaway beds and entertainment centers with plenty of drawers and shelving will offer up space for storing winter clothes , linens , shoes , and more . If your basement has a firecode approved separate entrance , you may even be able to rent the space out for extra income . Be sure to research and follow your community ’ s tenant / landlord laws if you ’ re considering this option .
