Wedding Words:
Words from the literary greats
By Louise Baker
I thought I’d take things back to basics for this, my eight wedding words
column. Summer is well and truly upon us, and with it the tradition-
al wedding season. If you’ve chosen to get married during the summer
months take inspiration from these words of wisdom written by some of
our most beloved writers and authors; traditional words for a traditional
wedding, or perhaps the icing on your unconventional cake.
For your vows...
I thought I’d start with this classic by Elizabeth Barrett Browning; it’s one
of my favourites, and would suit a wedding of any kind. Read, and re-read
this poem’s gorgeous words. You’ll fall in love, I promise.
“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being an Ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of every day's
Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right;
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old grief 's, and with my childhood's faith.
