Photos by Shelby Cude but we finally decided to put a safety rig- ging point on each vertical trusses. Having moving truss added another level of safety concerns to the table. We were think- ing about having me program and run the motion with the lighting console, but decid- ed at the end that it was more safe to have Morgan (Prine, Rigging and Motion Control Operator) control it. ESI to SM: What are your thoughts on safety with the service you provide? SM: It is always difficult when you are de- signing a lighting rig that needs to fit both within a festival stage as well as full touring production for headline tour scenarios. In a festival stage context space is limited and there is generally not the time or the facilities to build equipment from cases to comple- tion. It is a difficult decision to maintain the artistic integrity of the design over the con- straints that festival layouts can give touring productions. It was important for Nitelites to be able to have the time to realize the design physically before the day, this provided the opportuni- ty to create all custom looms, address all fix- tures and check that everything worked well before being packed onto the truck. With any design concept, it is imperative to have pre-production time as it gives the chance for the team to solve problems before they ar- rive on site. With everything we do, we want to ensure that all installation procedures are identified and all safety factors are well con- trolled, obviously eliminating hazards are important to us given the chance but where this is not feasible, all risks will be reduced to make them practical and as safe as possible. 21
