The Legacy Society Securing Kiawah’s Legacy For Future Generations Do you remember the first time you came to Kiawah Island? I do! It was 1980 and as we passed through the first gate I could not believe my eyes. I had never seen any part of South Carolina that looked like Kiawah. Huge oak trees drapped in moss, thick understory vegetation, marshes with the ebb and flow of tides, sticky pluff mud, deer peeking out from behind palm trees, bobcats lolling around the golf course at dusk, and so many beautiful species of birds. It was a different world. I knew then that I had found a place that I hoped to call home one day. To preserve this Kiawah we all know and love, it has become clear that the Conservancy needs to think beyond just annual fundraising to building a firm foundation for the future of our Island. To that end a generous donor provided “seed money” for an endowment for the Conservancy to provide funds for its mission going forward. Philanthropic research shows that one of the best ways to build an endowment for a nonprofit organization is through Legacy or Planned Giving. The Kiawah Conservancy is focused on establishing a Legacy Society to recognize those individuals and families who have: • Bequeathed the Conservancy a percentage of their estate or a set dollar amount; • Named the Conservancy as a beneficiary of a retirement account, life insurance policy, or other financial account; or • Created a Trust or created a planned giving vehicle to benefit the Conservancy. We want to recognize the generosity of our supporters when they choose to invest in the future of the Conservancy through planned giving. We invite you to become a member of the Legacy Society. Simply complete and return the card at your table and we’ll be in touch with more information.
