Butterfly Milkweed
Asclepias tuberosa
A flowering perennial that can easily be grown from seed. Its bright
orange and red flowers attract a variety of butterflies. It is the larval host plant
for the monarch butterfly as well as the queen. By incorporating milkweeds
in your landscape, you can provide a plant that monarchs rely on for
reproduction.
Palamedes Swallowtail
Papilio palamedes
One of the largest and most commonly observed butterflies in the
southeast. It is a strong and powerful flier, but readily stops to drink nectar at
colorful flowers. Although a frequent garden visitor, it seldom strays far from
its woodland home. It is readily distinguished from most other swallowtails in
the region by its large size and bold yellow striping.
