numerous eco-friendly initiatives at its properties . For example , WE CARE has also eliminated paycheck stuffers ( informational inserts in employees ’ payroll envelopes ) by replacing them with posters in high-traffic , staff-only areas .
WE CARE has also promoted employee knowledge around sustainable practices for laundering , recycling and food waste composition , resulting in over 538,000 gallons of water saved , 3,311 pounds of electronicwaste recycled , and 200 tons of food waste composted ( 100 % of collected food waste generated ) among all of the hotels in 2021 .
Front-runners in sustainability , Bahia Resort Hotel and The Lodge at Torrey Pines are a part of the TripAdvisor GreenLeaders program , which awards distinctions to hotels for their commitment to green practices , such as implementing recycling , tracking energy usage and providing locally sourced toiletries .
Additionally , three of Evans Hotels restaurants , A . R . Valentien and The Grill at The Lodge at Torrey Pines and Oceana Coastal Kitchen at Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa , were certified in 2021 as “ oceanfriendly ” by the Surfrider Foundation , a
Southern California-based nonprofit that protects and preserves the world ’ s oceans and beaches . To be certified by the program , restaurants must follow sustainable practices like reducing the amount of plastics used , recycling appropriately , taking advantage of reusable tableware and only providing straws upon request .
Evans Hotels takes its eco-friendly efforts a step beyond by working with companies that recycle cooking oil , which convert its 3,423 gallons of used oil into biodiesel , an alternate energy source for diesel vehicles . This reciprocity with these companies not only helps the hotels , since they won ’ t need to dispose of the oil themselves ( which can be hazardous ), but also the environment .
“ It ’ s these forward-thinking practices that make for a successful corporate social responsibility program ,” says Anthony Belef , Chief Human Resources Officer .
“ It ’ s engaging the culture and strengthening it even more ,” he says , adding that the program reinforces the company ’ s philosophy of giving back . “ Happy employees mean happy guests and a happy community .” g
