C-peptide alone seems not a good measure for graft failure. Basically a HbA1c > 7.0% with a C-peptide > 50pmol/l and the
need for antidiabetic therapy should be indication for a retransplant.

The first presentation entitled “Giving bad news” was by Mrs. Logar Zakrajšek from the University Hospital in Ljubljana,
Slovenia. She works as clinical psychologist in surgical units, mainly with patient‟s pre and post organ transplantation. In
her presentation, she focused on communication techniques related to the organ donation request. In addition, based on
her extensive experience working as a psychologist in a university hospital, she provided advice for coordinators on how to
stay fit in order to cope with the sometimes stressful and strenuous job in a hectic environment.
Dr. Van Rijn of the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands
provided a presentation on the recently opened “Preservation and Resuscitation
Unit”. She works as a PhD student and Transplant Coordinator at the Department
of Surgery in Groningen. In the Groningen Transplant Center, a brand new and
highly innovative preservation and resuscitation unit has been built and was
recently put into operation. Dr. Van Rijn showed the design of this unique facility
and how the logistical processes are performed. She gave also an insight into the
expected added value of this unit for both the work of transplant professionals as
well as paid attention to the growing importance of organ preservation for graft and patient survival.
The “MOOC - Clinical kidney transplantation” was introduced by Dr. Reinders. Dr.
Reinders works as a Nephrologist at Leiden University Hospital in the
Netherlands. Recently, a so-called Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on
kidney and pancreas transplantation has been launched. In her presentation, Dr.
Reinders gave an insight in the content of this Massive Open Online Course and
explained what is the expected added value of this new teaching method.
Forboth transplant professionals and the university hospital this way of
education is proven to be highly beneficial.
