Facts and myths about learning
foreign languages
We all know, studying languages is a very useful skill. But when it comes to actually begin study, you probably hear theories like "best age to study is..." and you give up. Here are a few myths and facts about studying languages.
1. "As you are older, there is less chance you will learn new language".
Myth! It is scientifically proven that our brain is capable of getting to know and remembering things our whole life, no matter what age we are. The point is to do it repeatedly. Of course how earlier we start then better, but don't surrender just because you are not a teen anymore, it's never to late to start learning something new and practice our brain!
2. "You need to spend time every day to study language"
Fact! If you want to speak advanced language it is the best if you spend some time everyday. But that doesn't mean hours. It can be even 10-20 minutes, a quick lunch break to revise material, learn a few new words or even play a podcast in foreign language during cooking.
3. "You need to have talent in order to learn language"
Myth! There is not anything like talent or skill for picking up languages. It is all a hard work, habit of studying and motivation! You can move mountains if you want to, you don't need be gifted for that.
4. "I need to move overseas and talk with native speakers"
Another myth! Yes, speaking with native speakers and being surrounded by language will definitely help you pick up language but you can do it from your home. Try watching native speakers' videos, read a book, listen to their music, find some online friends - native speakers that you can talk with! (but be careful with that, you can't trust everyone on web).
To sum up, it's never to late to start learning new language, you just need to do it systematically, with proper motivation, spend a few minutes everyday and try using it in everyday life. So instead of reading and believing discouraging myths, go and start studying new language!
