One of the other Windrush passengers was Oswald
‘Columbus’ Dennison. He also wrote about the experiences
of arriving on the Windrush.
Here is how he describes the experience in his
Windrush Poem:
‘It was 1948 on the Windrush ship
500 men from the Caribbean was on it
From warm Caribbean sand, to this cold English land.
We spent twenty eight day on the ship and everyone felt
real sick, couldn’t take the tossing of the Windrush ship.’
The excerpt from the poem mentions that each passenger
had a little ‘grip’ or suitcase. In 2015 the Home to Home
exhibition launched at Nottingham’s Caribbean Carnival
showed suitcases containing replicas of some of the
objects brought by the pioneering people on the Windrush.
