It doesn’t seem that long ago that major steps forward in transponder technology, ground equipment and compression combined to unleash the small dish TV revolution. Throughout Europe, where broadband cable was often more a conversation piece than an industry, DTH became the way to deliver new pay-TV services. With Sky and Canal + in the vanguard, before long every European nation had at least one DTH pay-TV provider. Even in the US, the Kingdom of Cable, DTH challengers DirectTV and Dish took off. But more recently, all the talk has been of OTT, TV Everywhere and connectivity. These, let’s be honest, are not satellite’s strongest suits. And so, even though millions and millions of TV dishes still stare up at the sky all over world, satellite has begun to be talked about as yesterday’s technology.
