One thing we all know; consolidation has continued in 2015, and is likely to continue further. Two of the top three STB makers have changed hands, illustrating that while some see the future in the cloud, others see a long life cycle still for CPE. Actually, the two views aren’t incompatible, for the cloud and CPE will increasingly work together – indeed will be inextricably linked. The choices will be about how thin the client device becomes and that will be dependent on what it is left to do. Some of how busy the HG or STB is will depend on how successful media and communications providers are in becoming the trusted partner to be the agents or proxies for managing the subscribers’ Smart Home in the era of the Internet of Things. Meantime, it is as well to remember that, while all the trends are to connectivity, most television for most of the word is still delivered in a one way transmission and most of the providers still want a Set-Top they control in their subscriber’s home.
