EUNOIA True Story By Annesha Dutta, Area Director, Area H2 Once upon a time, about 20 years ago, a small girl was left alone in a beauty parlor to have her hair cut. Her mother popped into the opposite shop. The hair stylist went on chopping the girl’s hair. Every now and then, she asked the girl, “Is this OK? Should I stop?” The girl didn’t reply. Fortunately, her mother came back and horrified, stopped the haircut. The stylist asked the mother, “Is your girl deaf and dumb? She didn’t speak once.” The girl was neither deaf nor dumb – she was just scared, scared of talking to people. So scared that the voice from her heart could not reach her mouth. Two months back, that girl, now a woman, spoke to 30+ strangers in a company like Infosys, for 30 minutes – the topic of her workshop – ‘How To Overcome Stage Fright in Public Speaking.’ If you time-traveled and asked that small girl – “Hey, do you know you will love public speaking someday?” She would had just stared at you, appalled. And cry. This is the power of Toastmasters, especially my club – Salt Lake Toastmasters Club, Kolkata. It gave me belief. That I can write my own story. And talk about it. If I can, you can. This is my story. SEP 2016 | EUNOIA | 18
