Google+ Hangouts has its perks: one can’t deny that. But how can a group such as our own benefit from its video chats and various other engaging group features?

By utilizing Google+ Hangouts, the alumni of the European Union Center can continue to connect with the faculty, staff and current students who are based in Freiburg long after they themselves have left. Still in the implementation phase, Google+ Hangouts will begin a trial run just before it ushers in the official launch in the spring of 2014.

Practically speaking, how does this work? What are the logistics? Once or twice a semester, a topic will be added to the IES Abroad European Union LinkedIn subgroup. This topic will be an EU-US relations relevant topic. Two faculty members, two current European Union students and one moderator will be chosen to discuss this topic for an hour and half block. Alumni—five per thirty minute block—will then be given to the opportunity to join the Google+ hangout via their Gmail account address. Together, these ten people will be able to discuss the chosen topic in addition to speaking about their own connection to the topic; whether it is what they are currently writing their Master’s Thesis on, what they are preparing for the next class lecture, or a much more precise question relevant to their career.

Alumni will be given the opportunity to have their name placed on the short list and/or a reserve list for the Google+ hangout. Once their registered time to speak occurs, they will immediately be added by the moderator into the group. This allows for an even flow of traffic in and out of the Google+ hangout.

All registered alumni, students and faculty, as well as the moderator, will be given a guide to the Google+ Hangout. Furthermore, if the moderator believes an article or a video would be applicable to a fruitful discussion, it will also be included in the guide.

This is an exciting opportunity that we believe will create a very open environment for discussion between alumni, faculty, current students and staff. We hope that you will join us in this exciting endeavor.
