The castle of Gramvousa

At the eastern end of Crete, near CapeGramvousa and the lagoon of Balos with exotic waters there are two uninhabited islands. The Wild and the Day Writer. Imeri Gramvousa is famous for its beautiful beach, for its solitary shipwreck and, finally, for its imposing Venetian castle. The castle was built in 1579-84, at a height of 137 meters, above the excellent natural harbor of the island, in designs and under the supervision of Latino Orsini. The shape of the fortress is irregular on three sides with walls and bastions on three sides, while on the north it is protected by steep cliffs.Gramvousa in ancient times was calledKoryko, while the name Gramvousa comes from theVenetian word Garabuse, which means something like "cape outpost".
