DASKYLEION
Daskyleion is an early period settlement like Troy. It is located 30 kilometers in the south of
Bandirma near the famous Bird Lake. According to some ancient writers, a group of Aoels
settled there in the 12th BC. Kurt BITTEL was the first researcher who spotted the place
which is called Hisartepe nowadays. Later Prof. Dr. Ekrem BAKIR started to unearth the
ancient city in 1954.
Daskylos, who was the king of Lydia left Lydia and came to Daskyleion because of some
throne conflicts in the 7th BC. His son Gyges was born in Daskyleion. After the death of
Daskylos, Gyges was recalled to Lydia. Gyges became the king of Lydia. Later, this city was
called 'Daskyleion' because, Daskyleion means 'Daskylos's place'.
All ancient writers mentioned about its beauty. Because of its strategic importance, during its
history, Daskyleion was conquered by lots of nations like Phrigians, Lydians, Akhaemenids,
Macedonians and Byzantines.
