PALATA FOUNTAIN
Palata fountain is located one kilometre in the north of Erdek. This fountain’s Greek name
was ‘’Pağatan’’. This name means ‘source’. The current name of the fountain is different
form of the word Pağatan. When the researchers came out on top of the fountain they found
a Greek inscription.Why Greek? Because people of Kyzikos, which is an ancient city in the
Marmara region, near Erdek county, had immigrated here from Thessaly in Greece.
This incription is the second inscription in the Paul Lucas’s book. Pul Lucas is a traveller and
researcher. Lucas had seen it under a pile of Stones and took a copy of this incription.
Then who made this fountain? It’s unknown. It is a secret. Neighbouring residents don’t have
any information about this fountain’s history. And this fountain’s water is very cold and
delicious. Water flows steadily. Neighbouring residents told us ‘’ If you drink the water you
will never leave Erdek.’’But we didn’t drink. Because the water looked dirty and muddy.
There is a cistern behind the fountain.Water comes from that cistern. It’s like a water tank.
Actually right now there are some garbage, mud and dirt around the cistern.
I did a small research , asked people but I didn’t find any exact information about this
cistern. But some people told me ‘ It’s orginal.’I agree with them. I think it looks
mysterious and beautiful.
It isvery dirty around the fountain it looks bad. Because people use this fountain out of
purpose. They come with buckets and brushes to wash their animals or cars. It’s a bad
situation.Unfourtunately there are a lot of people who have bad habits. And here is their
living space. Neighbouring residents protest this situation. But the municipality cannot do
anything. And this place is still the same. Apart from the fountain there is a tree in front of
the fountain. This tree is as old and historical as the fountain. Recently because of the
weather conditions half of the tree overturned.
