Founded 10 years ago, this project, supported by the European Commission in cooperation with institutions in the member states, has gained on popularity. Electronic school partnerships known as eTwinning currently offer space and tools for cooperation for over 282, 000 teachers from 133, 000 schools not only in EU member states. Other more or less geographically distant countries in Eastern Europe and North Africa are gradually joining in.
From the very beginning the core eTwinning idea was to build international cooperation in education of children aged 4 to 20 based on the principle of using information and communication Technologies in teaching process.
Today eTwinning represents the following:
- a school of tomorrow – open education with flexible approaches and computer skills
- an easy way to international cooperation
- a natural way of using ICTs in classroom
- professional cooperation of teachers and pupils
- a wide range of curricullar topics used as project ideas
- a multitude of interactive teaching methods, pedagogical approaches and exchange of ideas

Every person needs a wide range of competences to respond to difficult challenges of today’s world and create values in life and good living conditions. The schools actively involved in international cooperation in the first decade of the project managed to develop in pupils a number of important competences, which will be inevitable for life in the future.
A competence is “more than just knowledge and a skill. It also encompasses an ability to fulfil complex requirements using and mobilizing psychosocial resources (including skills and attitudes) in a specific context.”
The most important combination of knowledge, skills and attitudes is contained in 8 key competences, as follows:
- communication in the mother tongue
- communication in foreign languages
- mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology
- digital competence
- learning to learn
- social and civic competences
- sense of initiative and entrepreneurship
- cultural awareness and expression
