In the early 20th century it became very fashionable to wear a real feather in your hat, this was also called the “plume boom”. Women would wear hats that featured feathers, wings and sometimes full taxidermies birds. This left the bird population plummeting and some even became extinct (D’Souza, 2014). 1900’s Figure 9 1920’s & 1930’s Figure 8 The 1920’s and 30’s were similar eras in that fur coats were fashionable in both. In the 20’s it was more fashionable to wear a coat with a fur collar that could be made out of animals such as mink, raccoon, fox and beaver, but this was only for the upper classes. Middle classes had to choose within the regions of squirrel or chinchilla (Vintagedancer, n.d). The use of fur increased in the 1930’s as full fur coats, made out of the same animals, came into fashion (Mahe, 2012). Figure 7 10
