Ethics and Sustainability in the Mass Market | Page 10
In the early 20th century it became
very fashionable to wear a real
feather in your hat, this was also
called the “plume boom”. Women
would wear hats that featured
feathers, wings and sometimes full
taxidermies birds. This left the bird
population plummeting and some
even became extinct (D’Souza,
2014).

The 1920’s and 30’s were similar eras
in that fur coats were fashionable
in both. In the 20’s it was more
fashionable to wear a coat with a
fur collar that could be made out of
animals such as mink, raccoon, fox
and beaver, but this was only for the
upper classes. Middle classes had to
choose within the regions of squirrel
or chinchilla (Vintagedancer, n.d).
The use of fur increased in the 1930’s
as full fur coats, made out of the same
animals, came into fashion (Mahe,
2012).
