“General capabilities are a key dimension of the Australian Curriculum. They encompass knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that, together with curriculum content in each learning area and the cross-curriculum priorities, will assist students to live and work successfully in the twenty-first century. They play a significant role in realising the goals set out in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA) 2008 that all young people in Australia should be supported to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, and active and informed citizens” (ACARA, 2013).

Successful Learners

Through the teaching of ethics within the classroom, the students are then able to go out into the world and make ethical choices in the local and global context. Their positive decisions are due to the teaching and positive example of their teachers.

Confident and Creative Individuals

Due to the students ethical understanding they are confident in their decisions that affect not only themselves but also others in a global context. Teachers should instil in their students this confidence and creativity that positively impacts themselves, their local community and their global community.

Active and Informed Citizens

Due to the confidence and creativity instilled in them by their teachers, students become active and informed important people within their societies. Their ethical understanding contributes to their activity within their community. They are respected and informed citizens due to the ethical teachings provided to them by their teachers.
