Today, the Moody Bridge symbolizes more than the distance between Bunnell and Flagler Beach. Through the voices preserved by Both Sides of the Bridge, it has become a bridge between past and present, between memory and history, and between neighbors whose stories are finally being told together.
In preserving these voices, Both Sides of the Bridge does more than document the hardships of the past. It preserves the courage, perseverance, joy, and humanity of the people who lived it— and ensures their experiences become part of the history Flagler County carries forward. The bridge that once marked a divide now offers something different: a place where stories from both sides can meet. E

Flagler County residents share their memories as part of the Both Sides of the Bridge oral history project.
Although rooted in one Florida county, the project reflects a much larger American story. Across the South— and in many communities beyond it— segregation shaped where people lived, learned, worked and gathered. The memories preserved in Flagler County echo experiences shared by countless communities whose histories have too often been overlooked.
By demonstrating a practical approach to collecting and preserving oral histories, Both Sides of the Bridge offers a model that communities across Florida and the nation can adapt to document their own stories before they are lost, creating a more complete and inclusive record of local history.
